Job Responsibilities

Golder Associates is currently seeking an experienced Senior to Principal level Soil Scientist to join the Contaminated Sites team in our Melbourne office.

In this unique role you will support our contaminated land, groundwater and risk assessment teams, with the expectation over time that you will build and lead your own team in the soil science discipline and develop contaminated land/land capability assessment opportunities across the business locally and regionally. It is preferred that you will have substantial environmental management or engineering services industry experiences (preferably in a consultancy) accompanied with contaminated land and agricultural sciences expertise.

You will be an experienced soil scientist with specialist skills in site contamination, especially in relation to:
* sampling and understanding of soil physical, chemical and biological processes for inorganic and organic chemicals
* movement of and likely spatial distribution of soil contaminants in the context of assessing and managing risk to beneficial uses and ad evaluation/design of remedial processes.
* understanding of freshwater and marine sediments, land capability assessment, salinity, carbon/climate change and water management practices.
* understanding soil morphology and soil forming factors, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil biology and limitations of various sampling methodologies in the context of soil science as related to the distribution and concentration of contaminants of soil throughout the soil profile.
* understanding the nature and limitations of the analysis techniques, including cation exchange capacity, salinity, ASS, total recoverable hydrocarbons and soil fertility analytes.

Job Requirements

You will be required to apply these skills in:
* assessing and managing acid sulphate soil and naturally occurring elevated metals in geological formations.
* supervision and/or management of the planning, implementation, reporting, and evaluation of soil science aspects of contamination projects using recognised scientific principles.
* interpretation of behaviour of different contaminants in soil, groundwater and soil gas through an understanding and interactions with specialists in the fields of risk assessment, toxicology, receptor pathway analysis, groundwater flow and modelling and integrates contributions from experts in these fields into the analysis of a site.
* recognising lithology and stratigraphy and understand their relationships to soil formation and soil type and the impact on contamination migration.
* interpreting the vertical and horizontal extent of contamination using observation and measurement, statistical analysis, modelling, or other valid methods.

You will be a Certified Environmental Practitioner (CEnvP), CPeng and/or a Certified Practitioner with Site Assessment and Management accreditation and have a relevant bachelor or postgraduate qualification in Geology/Environmental Science/Agriculture and/or Soil science.
