THE POSITION
Golder Construction is seeking to hire an experienced Construction Operations Manager to work closely with its Western Canada Regional Leader to expand and strengthen the capabilities of the group within Western Canada. Golder Construction is a Canadian licensed contractor providing ground engineering, mining, and environmental construction services, primarily in Canada, but with an increasing ground engineering market in the US.
Our Western Canada operations are centred in Burnaby, British Columbia with a smaller team in Calgary, Alberta. Our Burnaby office also acts as the centre for all ground engineering projects executed in North America. The Construction Operations Manager will therefore be required collaborate with our sister company in the US for the delivery of ground engineering projects in that region.
Reporting directly to Golder Construction’s Western Canada Regional Leader, the Operations Manager is responsible for the successful bidding and delivery of all construction projects in Western Canada in addition to ground engineering projects elsewhere in Canada and the US, ensuring safe, technically sound and profitable projects delivered on time and on budget.
The role of the Operations Manager is to lead, oversee and strengthen our Western Canada teams. The Operations Managers initial direct reports will be Western Canada’s three Contracts Managers and the Preconstruction Leader.
The current annual construction revenues generated by our Burnaby and Calgary operations are in excess of $50M. The Operations Manager will be based in our Burnaby office but travel to other offices and sites in expected.
The Operations Manager is to ensure that the company meets or exceeds the expectations of our clients related to construction delivery as well as the health and safety, quality and profitability goals for all projects (individual project and aggregate basis).
He/she provides the coaching, support, leadership, team-building, guidance, training and resources necessary to fulfill his/her role and responsibilities and meet his/her objectives,
Specifically, the Construction Group Operations Manager will:
- Lead the continued improvement in Health and Safety performance on the company’s construction sites with the support of the group H&S coordinator and H&S committees;
- Be responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of proposals and bids in accordance with Golder Construction’s processes and risk management protocols;
- Be accountable for the safe execution and delivery of our construction services, in accordance with our Health and Safety program;
- Work in partnership with the Western Regional Leader and other senior employees of Golder Construction to ensure that the company’s project and risk management protocols are rigorously and consistently applied throughout the execution phases of all projects;
- Lead the continued development and organization of highly motivated well-trained collaborative preconstruction and construction teams to meet the challenges that will arise as the company continues to expand and move into new markets;
- Be accountable for the quality of the projects delivered to Golder Construction’s clients and the financial performance of the Group;
- Be accountable for the accuracy of our project cost control system and the timely delivery of the information;
- Encourage, promote and facilitate the effective sharing/coordination of resources and best practices between and among our regional Canadian and US Ground Engineering construction teams;
- Be responsible for the negotiation of contracts, significant scope changes and project related claims;
- Liaise and participate with the Western Regional Leader and Golder Construction’s Risk Manager and President in reviewing and setting the strategy for both major bids and proposals and those with a higher risk profile;
- Provide constructive feedback to estimating teams regarding the outcome of projects and specifically regarding productivities, methodologies, resources and opportunities for improvement in the bid preparation process;
- Respectfully and effectively listen to and communicate with his colleagues and other stakeholders in Golder Construction and Golder.
Job Requirements:
The successful candidate will have the following:
- Fifteen or more years of experience in the construction industry preferably with at least five years’ experience in a similar leadership position in a Civil or Specialist Ground Engineering construction company;
- Strongly interested to become a senior shareholder of Golder;
- Be based in Burnaby, British Columbia, but available for extensive travel;
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (Civil or Geotechnical preferred) or equivalent;
- Knowledgeable in civil engineering and specialized ground improvement, foundations and containment techniques;
- Ability to build, lead, motivate and mentor high performing teams;
- Ability to train and mentor professional and non professional staff;
- Ability to learn new technical services and solutions;
- Strong knowledge of estimating, proposal preparation, cost control processes and tools;
- Positive attitude and desire to succeed;
- Keen interest in business systems and processes linked to the delivery of construction services ;
- Flexible and able to operate in a dynamic business environment;
- Ability to connect and develop relationships with various internal and external stakeholders;
- Professional and proactive;
- Strong communication skills in English;
